Newly Qualified Dentists to Register with HMRC

Time to register with HM Revenue and Customs for self-employment

You need to register for Self Assessment with HMRC if you become self-employed and your income from self-employment exceeds £1,000 in a tax year (which runs from April 6th to April 5th). Many of you who completed your foundation year recently will be starting self-employment very soon.

You can register before you start earning money, there’s no penalty for registering early. In fact, it is recommended to register as soon as practicable.

The key deadline to remember is 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you become self-employed. For example, if you started working as self-employed on 1st  September 2024 (during the 2024-2025 tax year), you would need to register by 5th October 2025.

Here at PFM we complete the registration for self-employment for our clients, free of charge.
